Remedies for the Winter Blues

The shortest day of the year might be behind us in the Northern Hemisphere, but we’re still a long way from summer sunshine and the mood-boosting properties it brings with it.

Here are 10 of our favourite mood-boosting winter remedies.

Diffuse essential oils

We love using the power of scent to lift our spirits. Some of the essential oils we use to increase energy and mood include citrusy notes like Grapefruit, Sweet Orange, and Bergamot, woodsy scents like Lavender, Rosemary, and Spruce, and the invigorating power of Peppermint.

Try light therapy

Grey, cloudy skies start to get to nearly all of us this time of year. While many people associate light therapy lamps with seasonal affective disorder, they’re actually a great tool for anyone who feels down or fatigued in the winter. Sunrise-simulating alarm clocks are also a gentle way to help you wake up more naturally on dark winter mornings.

Get into nature

Even if it’s raining, a walk outdoors can be so good for the soul—fresh air, a brisk pace, and signs of nature are all invigorating and can help re-energize you. If the sun happens to come out, do your best to get outside for at least 15 minutes.

Take Vitamin D3

Supplementing with Vitamin D3 can help balance the lack of natural Vitamin D our bodies produce when exposed to the sun. Talk to your doctor or naturopath about how many daily IUs make sense for your body.

Seek out bright hues

Wear brighter colours, buy vibrant flowers, and pick up an accent piece for your home or office to pop against the world’s grey backdrop. Warm shades of yellow, orange, terracotta, and rose are easy choices, as are brilliant shades of green.

Stay active

While it can be tempting to stay home and cozy up on the couch, getting your endorphins going through exercise will benefit you so much more. If you’re finding it hard to stay motivated, grab a workout buddy and hit a class, which will force you to power through an entire workout. A brisk walk-and-talk is also a fun and easy way to get in some cardio.

Socialize

It can be easy to hide at home when it’s gloomy out, but staying social is one of the best and easiest ways to elevate your mood.

Choose uplifting entertainment

If you’re going to listen to music, watch shows, or go to live events, try to choose uplifting options. Invite in laughter, whether through a great comedy film or checking out a local stand-up show.

Get a massage

Physical touch instantly creates a sense of wellbeing. Even if a high-end spa is out of your budget, there are many more affordable options, including Chinese reflexology, which can stimulate all sorts of wellness points.

Hire a pro

If you feel like your blues just aren’t lifting, try hiring a counsellor or coach to help you determine the best support and solutions for your unique needs. And don’t worry too much—summer is coming.
