It’s back to school, it’s the start of fall, it’s forest fire season—oh yeah, and it’s a global pandemic. Anxieties are running high for many (most) of us, and understandably so. When it comes to calming the nervous system, we love turning to natural options that encourage deep breathing and relaxation.
How to use essential oils for anxiety
Essential oils are great because they’re completely non-toxic to breathe in, are plant-based, and smell amazing. And while scent is incredibly personal (meaning the best essential oils for you are the ones you love), here are some of our favourites to diffuse for soothing any creeping senses of panic.
Lavender Essential Oil for anxiety
Lavender is the ultimate calming oil. Its powdery, softly floral scent makes it a staple in every household—from solo time to bedtime. Its soothing effects can help relax the nervous system, thus creating a deeper sense of ease.
Diffuse: 15 drops. Close your eyes and be transported to the South of France.
Frankincense Essential Oil for anxiety
Grounding and slightly woody, Frankincense is a great option for helping with relaxation. Believed to be especially great for anxiety when used in a muscle massage, this oil is also a diffusing staple.
Diffuse: 20 drops. Breathe in, hold for five seconds, breathe out, hold for five seconds. Repeat five times.
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil for anxiety
With an exotic floral aroma, Ylang Ylang is sweet and full-bodied. Because it’s known for its mood-boosting properties and its ability to help with self-esteem, this oil is a great option for chasing the blues away.
Diffuse: 12 drops with 6 drops of Lavender. It’ll make your space smell like a blooming garden and make you feel good in the process.
Geranium Essential Oil for anxiety
A floral oil with a slightly minty base note, Geranium is balancing and calming. Studies show inhaling it can reduce anxiety and blood pressure, making it a slam dunk for stressful days.
Diffuse: 15 drops with 4 drops of Frankincense. Take 10 deep breaths.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil for anxiety
Known for its use in steam rooms, Eucalyptus contains menthol which makes it great for deep breathing, relieving muscle tension, and helping with headaches.
Diffuse: 12 drops with 6 drops of Ylang Ylang. Draw yourself a warm bath and pretend you’re at the spa.
Bergamot Essential Oil for anxiety
With the subtle scent of Earl grey tea, Bergamot is a comforting oil that has shown promise in helping improve mood and relieve anxiety.
Diffuse: 10 drops with 5 drops of Frankincense. Your home will smell like a hug from a loved one—and there’s nothing more anxiety-fighting than that.
