I have been thinking a lot about how I can best be an ally to Black people, Indigenous people, and other people of colour. There are many ways to be an activist; I choose to focus on my industry—the media—as a place that I can actively and effectively create change through the platform I am lucky enough to have.
Basenotes has always been about the exploration of modern wellness by and for all women, but that does not mean we have done an adequate job of representing a diverse chorus of voices up until this point. That changes now.
I am committed to publishing more BIPOC and LGBTQ+ writers, illustrators, and photographers; the perspectives of these communities are vital, and effective immediately I will do better to assign, pay, and publish these freelance creators. I will also ensure that going forward, our feature articles celebrate a more diverse and inclusive network of industry leaders, thinkers, and trailblazers in health, design, fashion, art, food, and more.
My editorial door is wide open—please get in touch with me at basenotes@vitruvi.com. Of course, I am actively doing my own outreach as well, as the onus is on me to create a community that truly represents our world.
We tell stories to connect us. To learn, to inspire. It is an honour and a privilege to help shape the stories that you read every day.
